HAYWARD (CA) – In the sweltering heat, the defending Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) champions Sky Blue FC (5-4-2, 17 points) used two second half goals to hand the league leading FC Gold Pride (7-3-1, 22 points) their first loss in nearly a month. Karen Bardsley returned to the Pioneer Stadium pitch to record her fifth shutout of the season in the 2-0 victory.
In a scoreless first half, both teams missed open opportunities at goals as Nicole Barnhart (.80 goals against average) held off the Sky Blue FC advances, matching the level of play between the goalkeepers. The position FC Gold Pride did not match Sky Blue FC was striker.
Rosana opened the scoring in minute 59 on a spectacular diving header. Heather O’Reilly lobbed a cross from the right corner to the left post and Rosana beat Barnhart after gaining the inside step on Kristen Graczyck. The goal was Rosana’s third of the season and came seconds before Tasha Kai replaced the Brazilian forward.
“As soon as Heather crossed that ball, I knew Rosana would score,” Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen said. “She is a great header, and she proved it on that goal.”
In a 1-0 hole, FC Gold Pride began finding openings in the Sky Blue FC defense, and room for the 2009 Golden Boot winner, Marta to operate. In the first half, Marta faced double and triple teams whenever she touched the ball, but in the second half, she found more space.
FC Gold Pride stayed on the attack for the next 30 minutes, but Bardsley and the Sky Blue defense held strong rebutting attack after attack until Kai turned the tables in minute 89.
“We played very disciplined and cohesively tonight,” Miettinen said. “The communication was very good between our players, and we got another solid game from our back line. All of these things are important when you play against a great team like FC Gold Pride, and I am very proud of the effort we put forth tonight.”
Kai showed her blazing speed when she ran outran the FC Gold Pride defense and deposited a Jessica Landstrom touch for her first goal in seven matches (third on the season). The win and three points moved Sky Blue FC into third place in the WPS standings.
After the All-Star break, Sky Blue FC returns to action July 7 in their first of three Wednesday night matches when the Washington Freedom invade Yurcak Field for a 7 pm clash.
