PLAINFIELD – Entering as a severe underdog, the coaches of Queen City Baseball League 10U Plainfield team look forward to the challenge awaiting the Cardinals in the Cal Ripken tournament starting Friday in South Plainfield this weekend. The Cardinals join strong squads from East Brunswick, Monroe, Spotswood, and the host South Plainfield in the (A) bracket. The (B) bracket consists of South Brunswick, Colonia, North Edison, Edison, and North Brunswick.
"We have a talented group going into this tournament," assistant coach Sam Smith said. "We may lack some experience but we hope our talent, hustle, and desire will give us an edge."
In previous tournaments, the Cardinals represented well, but one bad inning would lead to their downfall, this time things should go different.
"If we come to play, we should be very competitive,” assistant coach Hilburn Sparrow said. “But we have to come and compete."
The tournament is pool play in the pool-play format, a round-robin type where teams eventually eliminate each other and the final two teams play for the championship.
"Hopefully, we'll be one of the two teams at the end," manager Anthony Davis Sr. said. "We'll see."
