 | Denis Douglin fights his way off the ropes against Joshua Onyango |
All Fights at the WAMU Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York.
Dennis Douglin – Joshua Onyango (Middleweight)
Opening the card was Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin (9-0, 5 KO) against Joshua Onyango (13-19-1, 12 KO) in a middleweight bout. Douglin dominated the opening round with his left hand, not by jabbing Onyango, but with power shots. Douglin unleashed slick combinations of hooks, uppercuts and straight lefts at will against Onyango, in search of the first round knockout.
Douglin returned to his corner to a simple message from his mother/trainer, Saphya.
“When I went back to the corner she told me that I was a little overanxious, I was overthrowing my punches, and not setting up behind my jab,” Douglin said of his mother/trainer. “She just told me to relax a little bit and come in behind my jab.”
Douglin followed his mother’s instructions perfectly, settling down and picking at Onyango with his jab, followed by thunderous lefts. One such left dropped Onyango 34 seconds into the second round. Onyango beat the count, but tasted the canvas again when a sweeping right hook connected 36 seconds later, causing the stoppage.
With a growing fan base and having fought in large venues (The Prudential Center and Madison Square Garden), “Da Momma’s Boy” is looking for more.
“I just talked to my manager and he said I need to step up the competition, so hopefully I fight again in June, July and we step it up a little bit,” Douglin said after the fight. “I’m ready.”

Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh – William Ware (Jr. Welterweight)
Kavanagh (1-0, 1KO), making his pro debut, attacked Ware (1-3, 1 KO) from the opening bell. Charging forward with a spectacular work rate, the Irish fighter stalked the counter-punching Ware. Ware landed a sneaky counter right hand that got Kavanagh’s attention, before the destruction began.
Kavanagh stepped up the pace with combinations, working both the head and the body until a perfectly placed body shot followed by a head turning left hand dropped Ware. To Ware’s credit, he survived the round and came back for more. The second round quickly turned into target practice, with Kavanagh scoring another knockdown before the stoppage. "It was a great performance, he did exactly what I asked of him, and for his first professional fight I am very happy,” said trainer Freddie Roach after the fight. Click here for more photos
Tor Hamer – Kelvin Price (Heavyweight)
Two undefeated heavyweights took the stage trying to take the next step in their young careers. Floridian Kelvin Price (7-0, 4 KO) fighting with the mannerisms of Roy Jones Jr., earned a split decision over New Yorker, Tor Hamer (11-1, 8 KO).
It was a hard to score fight as Price used his reach advantage to keep the hard charging Hamer out of punching range. A counter left hand from Price dropped Hamer (flash knockdown) in the second round providing the margin of victory as the judges scored it 55-58, 55-58, 57-56 for the six rounder.
Hamer was definitely the aggressor, but the drop off in work rate and effectiveness in the final two rounds cost him.
