KENNESAW (GA) – Sky Blue FC Sky Blue collected their third win and three points on the strength of Karen Bardlsey’s third shutout off the season with a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Beat Sunday in Atlanta.
“Karen was absolutely unbelievable tonight,” Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen said after the win. “She made so many amazing saves and really kept us in the match. As a team, it gives you a huge confidence boost when you know that you will get such a high level of play by your goalkeeper.”
The aggressive Bardsley dove, deflected, and caught every shot directed her way from a Beat offense constantly in attack mode. Forward Ramona Bachmann and midfielder Mami Yamaguchi kept the pressure on Bardsley with varied attacks on the pitch, but the Beat (0-4-1, 1 point) could not penetrate Sky Blue FC’s last line of defense.
“One of my biggest goals is to stay focused for 90 minutes,” Bardsley stated. “Atlanta was really coming at us in the second half, and I knew that I would have to keep the switch turned on. Road wins are critical, and it’s huge for you as a team when you can pick up three points on the road.”
Sky Blue FC (3-2, 9 points) took the pitch minus their leading scorer Tasha Kai (hamstring) and the offense struggled without her. The lone score of the match came in the 50th minute on an own goal by the Beat’s Leigh Ann Robinson, when she mistakenly headed into her own net.
Sky Blue FC mustered three shots on target in the match, as the Beat peppered Bardsley with 15 shots on target.
An announced crowd of 7,428 witnessed the first match in the brand new Atlanta Beat Stadium, the first women’s soccer specific stadium.
