CARTERET – Maegan Larsen led the Justice on three early touchdown drives as the Justice coasted to a 40-0 victory over the Binghamton Tiger Cats in Independent Women’s Football League action Saturday in Carteret.

Larsen scored from 35 yards out on the Justice’s (3-0) third play from scrimmage and the rout was on. Binghamton (0-4) tried, but could not get their wishbone attack untracked, as the defensive front seven of the Justice stood stout.

Samantha Martin and Kish Sconiers provided pressure up the middle as Larsen and Janai Van Woeart provided run support from their secondary positions.

“I thought the new kids did a great job, I thought it was great to be able to get them in there,” Justice coach, Gene Basile said after the game. “They did a great job in new positions. On defense, we were physical and very aggressive.”

The aggressive defense limited Binghamton to 57 yards of offense, while the Justice racked up over 400 yards, all except 28 coming on the ground. Laurie Fitzpatrick led the ground attack with 174 yards. Basile is quick to remind his team of the challenge they face next week.

“They are going from this, to that, lets face it they (the Sharks) are bigger, stronger and faster, they are established. The number one thing is to get their heads ready.”

Next week, the New York Sharks come to Carteret.

The Tier I Sharks are undefeated, with a stingy defense that allows an average of nine points a game.

“If you look down the entire schedule of this league when a Tier I plays a Tier II, the Tier II usually gets killed, and I believe it’s because they quit before they get out there,” Basile said. “They’re in awe of them (numbers of players on Tier I teams) and they don’t understand the concept of they can only put 11 on the field.”

In their brief history, the Justice have struggled in games against Tier I teams, dropping both games last season, but Basile sees the big picture.

“If we can come out with the right mentality, and I’m not going to stress winning, I’m going to stress competing,” Basile said. “I really want them to come out and compete, and at the end of the day if we show up and really work hard and don’t get blown off the field, it’s a pretty good day for us.”

By no means is Basile conceding a victory, he knows his team is closing the gap on the Tier I teams, but he just keeps it in perspective.

“We’re a little team, from a little town with 22 kids and we’re not going to set unattainable goals here, but we sure as hell want to show up and play.”

The Justice and the Sharks face off Saturday May 1 kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Carteret High School Stadium.
