Union – In front of a packed house on the campus of Kean University, Oak Hill Academy defeated St. Patrick’s 79-78 in a high school basketball “instant classic”. The two national powers challenged each other in every possession, bringing the best out of the talented performers on the floor.

St. Patrick’s (19-3), playing hours after learning of their state playoff disqualification, started fast. Sparked by a five-point burst by all-state guard Kyrie Irving, the Celtics took a 10-7 lead midway through the opening quarter. Oak Hill (22-1) closed the quarter with a 10-4 run led by Maryland-bound guard Pe’Shon Howard’s five points.

Michael Gilchrist joined Irving in assaulting the Oak Hill defense in the second period scoring eight points each, but Oak Hill’s balance extended the lead. Howard (5), Doron Lamb (5), and Juwan Staten (6) combined for 16 of the Warriors’ 20 second quarter points.

The third quarter featured a head-to-head matchup between Gilchrist and Oak Hill’s Roscoe Smith. Gilchrist and St. Patrick’s opened the second half

on fire, taking their first lead of the game on a Gilchrist 3-point play that capped an 8-2 run. During that run, Chase Plummer caused havoc with his rebounding and hustling defense.

Smith countered with 12 points in the period off a jumper, a couple of baseline treys and two emphatic slams. Lamb chipped in with eight points in the quarter that ended with Oak Hill clinging to a 2-point lead.

In a hard-fought final period, the free throw line proved to be the difference in the contest. Oak Hill shot 56 percent (5-9) from the stripe in the quarter, including the front end of a 1-and-1 by Lamb with 9.4 seconds remaining.

On St. Patrick’s final trip up the court, Irving hit a streaking Derrick Gordon going to the hole. Gordon was fouled on his drive attempt with .4 seconds remaining in the game. Gordon struggled from the line (1-7) missed both free throws and Smith grabbed the rebound for Oak Hill sealing the game.
