PLAINFIELD - The Blue Devils and one of the county’s best big men, 6’8” Pat Sabatino, came to Cardinal country to get the upset against the top public school in the State. The uncharacteristic jump shooting Cardinals connected for 30 points from behind the arc to pull away and win 73 – 53.

The
game began in sluggish fashion for the Cardinals. The Blue Devil’s Ryan Hess penetrated at will early in the first quarter. After Ryan penetrated for the third time in as many tries and scored to tie the game, Coach Lubreski agrily called an early time out. It was obvious the Cardinals were playing flat. After playing a traditional power, Linden, the Cardinals were ripe for a let down. Coach Lubreski would not have any of that. Lubreski lit into his team and demanded that they not allow any more uncontested shots.

The Cardinals responded by limiting Hess to only two field goals for the rest of the game. Plainfield connected on three field goals from behind the arc, Mike Price, Sekou Harris, and Tyrone Johnson each connected to give the Cardinals the lead at the end of the opening quarter.

The hot-shooting Cardinals continued to let it fly from deep and exploded for 29 second period points. Price, Harris, and Johnson continued their hot shooting by combining for

five more from beyond the arc. The Blue Devils struggled from the floor. Westfield’s big man, Pat Sabatino forced the issue inside for the Blue Devils and gave the Cardinal big men fits with his uncanny quickness. Sabatino dropped 12 points in the first half in a gutsy performance.

Westfield came out in the second half focused on hot shooting guards Price, Harris, and Johnson, but the unaccounted for “Down Town” Allen Brown opened the half by connecting for back-to-back treys opening up a 22-point lead. Sabatino put his Blue Devils on his back, connecting for nine of Westfield’s 11 third period points.

With a commanding lead, the Cardinals spread the floor to run the patented Lubreski take the air out of the ball offense. Westfield increased their defensive pressure, a tactic that opened up lanes for the Cardinal points in the paint. The Cardinalss continued their defensive intensity aimed at slowing down Sabatino. Sabatino and Ryan Hess combined for 13 of the Blue Devils fourth period points but it was not enough to hang with the streaking Cardinals.

Noel’s Notes:

Tyrone Johnson led all scorers with 24 points.

Mike Price had a game high five steals along with a game high six assists.

Mike Williams lead the Cardinals with five rebounds.

Westfield’s was led by Pat Sabatino 23 points and Ryan Hess 15 points.
