PLAINFIELD – Niagara-bound Chanel Johnson’s (25 points) led a Plainfield second half surge in the Lady Cardinals’ 65-53 home victory over the Lady Minutemen of Elizabeth.The Lady Cardinals trailed Elizabeth by four points at the half, before storming back for the win.
Junior Emana Dent (27 points) spearheaded Elizabeth’s attack, combining with sophomore Jatirah Diggs to score 26 of Elizabeth’s 28 first-half points.Abdura Kearny kept the Lady Cardinals close with 10 points in a half in which Johnson watched the last two minutes from the sideline.
Things changed in the second half as the Lady Cardinals tightened up on the defensive end, allowing four points in the third quarter.Johnson exploded in the quarter netting eight of the Lady Cardinals’ 15 points as the home team’s lead grew to nine points.
Dent and Diggs heated up in the fourth quarter as Elizabeth (2-14) made run after run trying to close the gap.Johnson played with a “refuse to lose” attitude stopping Elizabeth runs with buckets twice in the final quarter.
A Dent free throw with 2:28 remaining in the game signaled the final run by Elizabeth.Deliberate on the offensive end, the Lady Cardinals (7-9) forced Elizabeth to foul to stop the clock.Danielle Hooks (13 points) went 5-6 from the line in the final two minutes extending the lead for the Lady Cardinals.
