EAST ORANGE (NJ) – Express captain, Troy Goodman made sure the lead did not slip away in the fourth quarter of the Express’ 90-79 win over the Maryland Marvels in East Orange. Goodman scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter after Maryland cut the Express lead to seven points.

“They have been kicking our butt in Maryland (twice in a row), so I just wanted to get this win on our court, this was a big game for us,” a winded Goodman said after the game.

The win evened the season series between the division rivals with each squad winning both games on their home court.

Maryland (5-7) took control early with a 17-3 run midway into the second quarter as Sam Wallace and Kenny Simms used their size to dominate the lane and control the offensive boards. If not for a half-ending run by the Express (7-3), the three-point lead at the half could have been larger.

“I told them we had about two guys giving us maximum effort and everyone else standing around,” head coach, Cassandra (Sandy) Smith said. “If everyone on the court gave us the same effort as the two guys busting their tails, we should win this game.“

Antionne Morgano, who led the second quarter run with a five-point burst agreed with his coach.

“We came out a little lazy I don’t know if it was due to the new rotation we have,” Morgano said. “Sometimes we come out lackadaisical, but we picked it up as the game progressed.”

Forward Devin Davis (16 points, 9 rebounds) picked his game up in the second half as well, battling on the boards and making the most of his opportunity filling the void left by in season departures.

“It’s almost like we forgot about the two players we lost because they (Jakeel Geary and Ahmad Mosley) came in and filled their shoes perfectly,” Davis

said. “The change gave me more minutes to show what I can do. Previously, I didn’t get much of a chance which was my fault for not going out and playing hard, but now that I play, I do what I have to do. It’s my time to step up.”

Jordan Fowler’s point per game average took a hit (7 points) as he spent the majority the evening shadowing the explosive Curtis Massey. Massey exploded for 29 points last time he set foot in the East Orange Campus High School gym, tonight he was held to 12.

“We are familiar with their players but at times we lose focus as to who is on the floor. We have to play everybody as tight as possible, because they all can score,” Morgano said. “We tried to take their big men out of the game, because last game they were effective against us, we wanted to take them out of the game and make their guards beat us.”

Maurice (Moe) Davis did his best to beat the Express, scoring 21 points on drives into the paint and connecting on eight of 10 free throws.

After outscoring Maryland 50-36 in the second half, the Express have a short time to rest, as they take the road for a Sunday afternoon game against the Tri-City Suns.

“I’m not worried about it at all (back-to-back) because I have a lot of confidence in my guys out there,” Goodman said. “We will play together and get another win.”

Coach Smith is still getting to know her team and has a plan of attack for the Express as they seek the sweep of this weekend games.

“Pretty much I will try the defensive scheme that I tried in the second half to see if that will work over there , if that goes well and helps us win tomorrow’s game, we will be on our way.”
