Plainfield Division of Parks and Recreation Forms Baseball League
Posting Date: September 29 2009

Augustine Dashiell

PLAINFIELD – “In light of economic times…” a perfect way to introduce a new youth sports program to the city of Plainfield. The Division of Parks and Recreation announced a new youth baseball program set to begin in the spring of 2010.

“We are offering residents an alternative, youth sports are so expensive it is hard to get families with multiple children a chance to play,” Plainfield Recreation Director, Dave Wynn said. “This action was way overdue.”

The flyer touts an unbelievably low registration price of $35 and Wynn does not see the price tanslating to a “watered down” service for the kids.

“Everything can use some improvement and we at Recreation have a reputation for running top notch programs,” Wynn said. “I’ll match my full-time staff with any staff in the state.”

Wynn and his staff will have their collective hands full introducing archery and modern hip-hop dance for the first time along with baseball.

“We just want to offer the best product at affordable prices,” Wynn said.

The existing Queen City Baseball League presently has a

10-year old traveling team competing in a fall-ball league, and plans to continue in the spring.

“After a great first season, the Queen City Baseball League will have a 2010 season. Our 11-year old travel team came in 3rd place in the Central Jersey Cal Ripken tournament, we have a 10-year old fall-ball travel team presently playing,” Queen City Baseball League President, Karen Glencamp-Daniel said. “We haven’t discussed joining Recreation, but either way we are looking for another great season, and we hope to speak to them in the future.”

Wynn seemed open to all possibilities.

“Absolutely, we would welcome people from other organizations joining us,” Wynn said. “If it doesn’t happen we will work out a schedule where both leagues can have access to the fields.”

Registration for the Plainfield Division of Parks and Recreation Baseball Program begin October 1 and run through February 12, 2010 at the City Hall Annex. The league is open to residents between the ages of 4 and 17.

Why are we using tax dollars to start another baseball program when QCBL didn't cost the tax payers any money

The funds are already allocated inthe Parks and Recreation budget, and more funding is coming in the way of grants procured by the parks and rec department so the league stays away from using any new taxpayer dollars that were not allocated in their budget.

I think this is a great idea. I left lil league baseball at Rock Ave. in 1998 and when I left we had one of the best best leagues around. Back to back state champs, and my traveling team that was coached by Dave Wynn dominated our competition. People who didnt even have children in the league came to watch us play cause we were so talented. This is a step in the right direction for Plainfield baseball and I plan on helping.
