ATLANTIC CITY – Quenton DeCosey scored 26 points as St. Joes of Metuchen defeated St. Patrick 50-46 in the showcase game of the “Battle of the Bay” at Atlantic City High School Saturday.
DeCosey received early help from freshman Karl Towns Jr. as Towns showed his range as St. Joes kept St. Patrick in their sight early in the opening quarter. Elijah Davis paced St. Patrick with four points as they held a slim lead at the end of the period.
Towns drained another trey early in the second period before DeCosey heated up and dropped five points of his own as St. Joes went on a 15-2 run. Chris Regus willed St. Patrick back into the contest with four points during a 7-0 run before the half.
DeCosey saved his best for the second half as he battled DeAndre Bembry for the headline position the rest of the way. Bembry (21 points) dazzled with a vast array of afro-to-the-rim dunks on his way to 17 points in the second half. DeCosey relied on his complete arsenal. The senior dunked, shot from behind the arc, and penetrated the lane on his way to 18 points in the final two quarters as St. Joes held on for the win.
