Harlem NY---The New Jersey Warriors traveled to Harlem NY to take on the Hudson Valley Cowboys in RAFL play at Riverbank State Park. The Warriors attacked the Cowboys defense with a great rushing attack, lead by backs NaQuan Jenkins and Darrell Glover. Both backs knew they had to elevate their games with the loss running back, Eric Salvary to a serious knee injury and Ufuoma Edojah unavailable for this week’s game.
Jenkins utilized his great speed to get outside, while Glover pounded the middle of the Cowboy defense as the game wore on. The Warriors scored first, when quarterback Mike Pernell connected with wide receiver Corey Cooper for a 28-yard touchdown pass, putting the Warriors up 6-0. The two-point conversion was successful with a Glover run.
The Warriors defense caused a fumble on the ensuing drive, giving the offense the ball at the 38-yard line. Pernell quickly hit tight end Ronald Carney for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
The second half began with the Warriors running game leading to a 2-yard touchdown run by Glover and a 20-0 lead. The score stayed that way up until the final play of the game, when the Cowboys avoided a shutout with a 50-yard pass play and conversion run.
After the Labor Day bye, the Warriors have a rematch with the division leading NJ Lions in Old Bridge Saturday September 6, 2008 at 3 pm. The Warriors are a game behind the Lions and this game will be for the division lead. If the first game is any indication, this will be a true war with plenty of knock ‘em out old school football.
“This is what any competitive person would want, a game where you control your own destiny, we want to be where they are and they want to continue with their success.” Co-Owner Edd Gladney said. “The league loves games like this, divisional rivalries enhance what they (the league) are building, and makes for some exciting football towards the end of the season. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
